African heads of state and government have unanimously endorsed a landmark digital transformation agenda at the latest African Union Summit, placing technology and connectivity at the centre of the continent's development strategy for the coming decade.
The "Digital Africa 2030" framework commits member states to expanding broadband infrastructure, developing homegrown technology ecosystems, and creating regulatory environments that attract digital investment.
The framework also includes provisions for digital identity systems, cross-border data governance, and a continental artificial intelligence research network.
Nigeria's delegation played a prominent role in shaping the final agreement, with the country contributing technical expertise from its growing technology sector centred on Lagos.
